Coming Soon - The Point!OPC is currently in pre-production of an immersive event dedicated to bringing Harry Nilsson’s iconic album, The Point, to life!
This exciting event will pay tribute to the record with a live band and storyteller. Guests will also be invited to participate in creative projects while enjoying point-themed snacks & libations! We hope you'll join us in celebration of this beautiful story - one of individualism & the vast possibilities the world has to offer. |
Director's Note:
As a child, I was privileged to have unlimited access to my parents’ vast and ever-growing music collection. My father was in the music business, and there were literally wall to wall record albums, CDs and cassette tapes for me to choose from. One of my favorites from as early as I can remember was a cassette recording of The Point by Harry Nilsson. I used to listen to the story and songs over and over with my friends, and we were always amused by the way Nilsson used the word “point” in so many different ways; we would even sit and try to count how many times within the story he would say point, pointing, pointed...
At the time, I was enchanted by the whimsical songs and enjoyed the story, but I didn’t think much about the deeper meaning until I grew up a little and began to encounter hostility from my classmates for being “weird.” The Point’s protagonist, Oblio, and his trusty companion, Aarow are the Outlaws in this tale, the “weird” ones, who are banished from their home for being different. It began to occur to me that this story is also about individualism, finding one’s own place, and the vast possibilities the world has to offer.
As a teen, and to this day, I’ve loved music more than anything else in the world. I used to sit in my bedroom and listen to my favorite music and envision accompanying dance numbers and large stage performances to go with it. Back then, I didn’t have any context for these thoughts or the language to describe them, but as an adult, having studied theater, storytelling and performance art, I now see that there is a venue for these kinds of performances, and it’s actually something that one can produce! That being said, it is time to debut The Point!
Outlaw Production Collective is not necessarily interested in creating straight theater; rather a more immersive experience where performers and audience share the same space, so originally, I wanted my production of The Point be more of a party; an interactive happening at which guests would be invited to eat, drink and participate in a number of creative projects while they enjoy music and the tale accompanied by wonderful live dancers.
In the summer of 2021, in collaboration with musician Will Whaelen, we brought The Point to the streets of Lafayette as part of the city’s “All Together Now” festival. Moving forward, we will enlist the talents of our in house band, Soup for the Family, to take it to the next level! Stay tuned
